My Name Is

As we take our first, hesitant steps towards a ‘new normal’, Penni Osborn shares with us a poem; the sentiment of which we feel resonates not just at this time, but for all time.

Ignorance is not the coat peg

That I hang my hat on

Despair is not a basket

My eggs are placed upon

Judgement is not a place

I visit in my dreams

Nor hatred, nor vengeance

Nor bigoted regimes

Injustice is not one of

My castles in the air

And no spite nor slander

Abide with it there

There is no intimidation

In my promised land

And doubt is not allowed

To have the upper hand

No racism, dogmatism,

Or sexism rules

Belong on the mission

That my presence fuels

Blinkered opinions

And small, narrow minds

Create the actions of fools

That I leave behind

Neither bullying nor persecution

Make my constitution

Retribution and fear

Aren’t my exploitation

Abuse is not my middle name

Violence is not my last

So, what exactly is my name?

You really need to ask?

My name comes from peace

From understanding, and such

Expanding of thought,

Of heart, of touch

My name seeks optimism

And throws out a rope

Of strength, faith, trust and love

For my name is… Hope
